Messianic Prophecies in Scripture

Celebrating the Bible Through Teachings

Messianic Prophecies Part 5: Psalm 22

Psalm 22:1-2

My El, My El, why have You forsaken Me-
Far from saving Me, far from the words of My groaning?
O My Elohim, I call by day, but You do not answer;
And by night but I find no rest.

Psalm 22 starts with the famous words uttered by Yeshua on the stake (cross) in Matthew 27:46 (also Mark 15.34),

"My El (God), my El, why have You forsaken Me?"

In what was a common practice of His time, Yeshua is not necessarily using these words literally, but calling to mind a passage from the TANAK (Old Testament). In this case, He is calling to mind Psalm 22, written by David. Yeshua is telling those around Him, as well as those who would later read His words, that what Psalm 22 was pointing to is being fulfilled in the present moment.

Taking a closer look at the psalm, we see much in the way of Messianic prophecy, so much so, that it can only be inspired by YHVH. Without being exhaustive, we find the following prophetic hints in the verses of Psalm 22.

Psalm 22:7-8

All those who see Me mock Me;
They shoot out the lip, they shke the head, saying,
“He trusted in YHVH, let Him rescue Him;
Let Him deliver Him, seeing He has delighted in Him!”

In verses 7-8, they shake their heads, saying, "He trusted in YHVH, let Him rescue Him" (cf Matthew 27.39-43, Mark 15.29).

Psalm 22:14
I have been poured out like water,
And all my bones have been spread apart;
My heart has become like wax;
It has melted in the midst of My inward parts.

In verse 14, He was poured out like water (cf John 19.34) and His bones were spread apart.

Psalm 22:15
My strength is dried like a potsherd,
And My tongue is cleaving to My jaws;
And to the dust of death You are appointing Me.

In verse 15, He was thirsty (cf John 19.28).

Psalm 22:16
For dogs have surrounded Me;
A crowd of evil ones have encircled Me, Piercing My hands and My feet;

In verse 16, they pierced His hands and feet.

Psalm 22:17
I count all My bones.
They look, they stare at Me.

Yet, in verse 17, His bones were not broken (cf John 19.36).

Psalm 22:18

They divide My garments among them, And for My raiment they cast lots.

In verse 18, they divide His garments (cf Matthew 27.35, Mark 15.24, Luke 23.34, John 19.24).

Psalm 22:20
Deliver My life from the sword,
My only life from the power of the dog.

Psalm 22:23
You who fear YVHV, praise Him!
All you see of Jacob, esteem Him,
And fear Him, all you seed of Israel!

This psalm is profound, for its prophetic imagery, as well as its ultimate message of deliverance, both for the psalmist (verse 20) and Israel (verse 23).

Psalm 22:28
For the reign belongs to YVHV,
And He is ruling over the nations.

Psalm 22:31
They shall come and declare His righteousness
To a people yet to be born, For He shall do it!

The end of the psalm points to the fact that YHVH will reign over all the nations (verse 28). His righteousness will be declared (verse 31), even to a people yet to be born.

For He, that is YHVH, will do it!
