Messianic Prophecies in Scripture

Messianic Prophecies Part 4: Psalm 18

David's song of deliverance from his enemies is presented in both Psalm 18 and 2 Samuel 22.

Let’s look at Psalm 18:1-2

I love You, O YVHV, My strength.
YVHV is my rock and my stronghold and my deliverer;

My El is my rock, I take refuge in Him;
My shield and the horn of my deliverance, my high tower.

In Psalm 18:2, David calls YHVH the "horn of my deliverance".

The word translated as horn is qeren and it most literally means horn, as in the horn of an animal. It's figurative meanings include a ray of light, a hill or peak, and strength and power. The word for deliverance is yesha, which means deliverance or salvation. It is related to the verb yasha, meaning “to save”. Both words are connected to the name Yehoshua (Joshua) and is the shortened form of Yeshua (Jesus), which means "YHVH saves".

Years later, the priest Zechariah (father of John the Immerser/Baptist), filled with the Spirit, prophesied that YHVH had raised up a "horn of deliverance" out of the house of David.

Luke 1:68-71
Blessed by YHVH Elohim of Israel, for He did look upon and worked redemption for His people, and has raised up a horn of deliverance for us in the house of His servant David, as He spoke by the mouth of His set-apart prophets, from of old-deliverance from our enemies and from the hand of all those hating us

Although Zechariah didn't exactly know who this would be, he knew that his son, John, would be the one to go before the Messiah.

Luke 1:76
“And you, child, shall be called prophet of the Most High, for you shall go before the face of YVHV to prepare His ways, to give knowledge of deliverance to His people, by the forgiveness of their sins

We know that the horn of salvation is Yeshua Messiah, who came in the strength and power of YHVH to provide salvation for all those who believe.

As Romans 1.16 declares, "For I am not ashamed of the Good News of Messiah, for it is the power of Elohim for deliverance to everyone who believes, to the Yehudi (Jew) first and also to the Greek."
