Biblical Manhood

Celebrating the Bible Through Teachings

Biblical Manhood Part 2: Caleb

While David’s story of facing a giant is more well known, he’s not the first biblical character to challenge a giant to a fight.

Numbers 13:32-33

“And they gave the children of Yisra’el an evil report of the land which they had spied out, saying, ‘The land through which we have gone as spies is a land eating up its inhabitants, and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great size. And we saw there the Nephilim, sons of Anaq, of the Nephilim. And we were like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and so we were in their eyes.’ ”

At the age of 40, Caleb encouraged Israel to take the land of Canaan. Numbers 13.32-33 tells us that there were giants in the land and that Caleb urged the people to take the land anyways, knowing that YHVH was with them. But the people feared the inhabitants of the land and did not believe YHVH so they were made to wander for 40 years in the wilderness as a consequence for their unbelief.

Flash-forward 45 years to Joshua chapter 14, and Caleb is the first Israelite to inherit in the Promised Land.

Joshua 14:14

“So Hebron became the inheritance of Kaleb son of Yephunneh the Qenizzite to this day, because he followed YHVH Elohim of Yisra’el completely.”

Though Caleb is 85 years old, he still has the same fighting, believing spirit. He asks for the land of the giants, fully intending to take the land from them. Joshua 15:14 tells us that Caleb was successful in driving out 3 giants from the land.

Joshua 15:14

“And Kaleb drove out the three sons of Anaq from there: Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai, the children of Anaq.”

Caleb followed YHVH Elohim completely. This is why he had no fear, even when faced with giants.
